Writing Workshop

So! For my birthday (which is Sunday), I signed up to go to the Seattle Writing Workshop, which is tomorrow! It's from 8:30-5pm, and at 9:30, I'm pitching my novel to an agent. 0_0

I am happy and excited, but also, I could just barf. I told Joe I was scared, and he said, "Don't be scared. The only thing that should scare you is if you show up to the address and it's just some guy's house and you're the only one there. In that case, just come on home!"

Then I explained, "No, I'm scared because I'm talking to an agent!"

And he said, "Well you're the one who chose to, right? And you could always choose not to. It's all up to you, and if it's something you want to do, you'll be fine."

And it is. So I guess I will. I guess it's true that it puts some control back in my hands to say I chose to do this, and I'm ok just seeing what will happen. I think I just need to expect this woman to be like, "No, not for me. Maybe if it was this or that, but not right now." Then that way, if she says that, I'll be like ok, that's what I expected. But if she says she wants to see more, I can just faint from joy right there on the spot.

The form said that when we see the agent, we should basically have a memorized query letter ready to go, sooooo here's what I have as of right now, and I'm going to try to actually sleep now, before tomorrow, without dying of fear.......

= = =

Ten year old Emmilou Bradshaw is an only child who lives in the small town of Seaside, and what she wants more than anything is to be loved and understood. Her parents are more concerned with themselves than with her. Classmates think she's weird. Their teasing of Emmi only increases after she and her best friend, Henry, make a gruesome discovery by the train tracks. Just when things seem at their worst, life improves dramatically. A woman named Pearl appears in town, and she seems to genuinely care about Emmi. Pearl dresses and speaks in unusual ways, and spends many afternoons with Emmi, before telling her a fairy tale about a magical land with a powerful resident named Spider. Before long, Pearl reveals that part of the story, a spiderweb bridge, is real, and she beckons Emmi and Henry both to come with her into a magical new land.

Emmi's excitement and belief in Pearl's goodness help her get across, but Henry's fears cause him to get lost through the bridge before he ever gets to the other side. This new land is not the magical paradise Pearl had described. That's because Emmi and Henry are living children, who have unwittingly entered the land that's supposed to be reserved for the recently dead. Things are eerie and different here, leaving Emmi with more questions than answers. What else from Pearl's story is true? Who is Pearl really? And where in this land is Henry? Facing monsters, harsh terrain, and frightening obstacles along the way, Emmi must find the courage she never knew she had in order to rescue Henry and get them both back to Seaside, before they become part of the land between life and death permanently.~

Well I think I have already sent you the last text I can send this morning because you are about to head into that place, based on this timeline. So maybe you won't get this, but I will send you some extra luck here!

It was nice reading about this, and rereading your query on a journal, considering it was so many years ago now that we met on livejournal. Now I get to see you all the time and you're a part of my life and really kind of a part of my family, what with sharing holidays sometimes and singing together and watching our kids play. And all of this time, I know one of your goals has been to try to pursue writing and publishing.

No matter what they say today, this is a big accomplishment that will help you as a writer. I think as you well know by now, most of writing is just being willing to show up and do the work. Showing up at a conference and sharing your query is getting you tons of practice, not only in making queries and and talking about your work to an audience, but in the emotional and mental challenge aspect of being willing to take the necessary steps to put yourself out there in publishing efforts anyway! :>

Congrats and I hope today goes well!

Best of luck!!! That's a pretty great pitch!

I look forward to hearing all about it when you return!
